Does God’s Miraculous Power Still Operate Today?

Recently, I received a letter from a reader whose faith was wavering. He wrote that he did not know anyone who had experienced an actual miracle, and he questioned if God still works miracles. He was writing to the right person because I’ve experienced multiple miracles! So, I encouraged him that God does indeed still perform miracles.

You might wonder why I have confidence in God’s miraculous power after twenty years of living with debilitating pain. How can I believe that God’s miraculous power operates today even though I still have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and cancer?

Both God’s Word and life experience have taught me that miracles come in many forms.

Have you ever asked, “God, why haven’t You healed me yet?” Perhaps you have started to wonder if God still performs miracles. Many Christians with health issues have been prayed over and anointed with oil by their church elders, repeatedly confessed every sin that might hamper healing, and attended healing prayer services again and again. We might even begin to feel embarrassed that healing seems to evade us. Sheepishly, we shake our heads when someone prays for our healing then opens their eyes and asks expectantly, “So, is your pain gone now?”

Discouraged, we may even begin to wonder if God still performs miracles today.

The answer is a resounding YES!

Let’s dive into the Bible to learn what Scripture tells us about God’s miraculous power. One story that might be familiar to you is from the Gospel of Luke:

“And a woman who had [suffered from] a hemorrhage for twelve years [and had spent all her money on physicians], and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His outer robe, and immediately her bleeding stopped” (Luke 8:43-44 AMP).

There are three gospel accounts of this story. Mark 5:26 says, She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.” You can imagine her desperation as she touched the fringe of Jesus’ garment. But can you imagine her surprise and relief when she was immediately healed?

After the woman was healed, Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” The Greek word for power that Jesus used is ‘δύναμις or dunamis.’ (Luke 8:43-46) Dunamis means miraculous power, might, and strength. Jesus knew that his miraculous power had healed this suffering woman, and he fully restored her body and spirit.

Does Jesus still miraculously heal people today?

Yes. I have experienced it. A few years ago, a surgical error during my cancer biopsy led to two additional neck surgeries, a surgical drain, severe infection, multiple hospital stays, and finally, unremitting neck pain. The lingering pain was distressing because living with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) means that post-surgical pain can last indefinitely.

One day, our church elders came over to pray for healing from cancer, so I asked them to pray for healing from the gnawing incision pain. As one of them prayed, I felt the sharp pain melt away! God’s power—dunamis—instantly healed me from the pain that had been unrelenting.

But I am not yet healed from other incision pains or other ailments. I  continue to pray for healing, but I have at times wondered, “Why hasn’t God’s miraculous power healed the rest of me?”

You may be struggling with the same question.

My suffering friend, let me introduce you to another suffering person who experienced Jesus’ miraculous power—but not in the way you might think. In 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, we learn that the apostle Paul was suffering so profoundly he described it as ‘torment.’ He pleaded three times (only three??) with the Lord, asking Him to remove this ‘thorn in the flesh.’

Did Jesus have the power to take away Paul’s suffering and pain? Absolutely.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. But unlike the instant healing of the woman in Luke 8, Jesus replied to Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power (dunamis) is made perfect in weakness.”

Sometimes the Lord’s power provides miraculous healing. Other times, the Lord’s power provides miraculous endurance. Jesus knows what you need, according to His purpose for your life.

Same power. Different purpose.

God’s miraculous dunamis power healed me from one type of aggressive cancer, melted away pain in an instant, and saved my life during multiple life-threatening medical situations. But God’s miraculous dunamis power also sustains me, strengthens me, and fills me with overflowing joy throughout decades with ongoing debilitating health issues.

Keep praying for healing. But understand that when you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, Christ’s miraculous power is always available for you.

Jesus’ power heals.

Jesus’ power sustains.

It’s the same miraculous dunamis power.

Trust God to use it in your life according to His purpose for your life.

Prayer: God, You have already healed me in so many ways. You healed my broken relationship with You when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior. Thank You for sending Jesus to take the punishment my sins deserve so that I could be forgiven and reconciled with You. Jesus triumphed over death when Your power raised Him to life again so that those who believe in You will also be raised to eternal life, fully restored and fully healed.

Lord, I continue to pray for healing on this earth. But until you choose to heal me, I pray for Jesus’ power to sustain me and be made perfect in my every weakness. I trust Your purpose for my life, and I know You supply all my needs. Give me opportunities to share the source of my strength. Help me to clearly and boldly share the Gospel message with others so they may also experience Your healing power in their lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen
